Minecraft Step-by-step

To make this cake you will need a 10″ square pan, green fondant, brown (or chocolate) fondant, two batches of buttercream icing (for crumb coat and green colored for grass piping), and of course a covered cake board, and your preferred decorating tools.

Bake 2-10″ square cakes, stack and crumb coated on a 10″ square cake board. While the cakes are cooling, craft your fondant pieces; 7 TNT’s, small tiles (3 different shades of brown and 3 different shades of blue), big green tiles (13 plus enough for the name), for “happy birthday” . The TNT were just thick pieces of red fondant cut into squares. I used one of my sons legos to make the circular impressions on the top of them, thin strips of white fondant wrapped around each, an edible black marker to write TNT, and thin pieces of chocolate fondant for the “fuse” . The other characters were purchased at my local Target , as I wanted these for her to be able to play with afterward. Roll out the chocolate fondant to approximately 30″ x 6″ to wrap around the entire cake with extra on top to help keep it from sliding down the cake . Roll out and cut a 9-9.5″ square of green fondant and place on top of the cake, covering the brown edges . Lay the fondant pieces and other decorations on your cake and position them where you want them  before securing. Lightly brush the bottom of each fondant piece with water, wait a few seconds for it to get sticky, then press against the cake. For the plastic characters, I used a toothpick to mark where they would be placed, then piped “grass” on those places. Then they were placed on the cake upon arrival at the party. This allowed a minimum of icing to get stuck up into each piece, as the “grass” was dried. Secure the rest of the brown tiles around the cakes edges  and the “Happy Birthday” tiles on the front . I found a “Logocraft” free font download and printed up the Happy Birthday Willa letters, then took it to a local cake supply shop and they printed it on a sugar sheet then I cut out each letter, and using a tiny amount of water, attached each letter to a tile . Place the cake on a covered (I used a cutout of white plastic disposable table cloth) 12″ cake board, securing with a little buttercream between cake boards. Pipe “grass” around the top and bottom edges, covering any seams. Place the TNT and the birthday girl/boys name on the board, securing with a small amount of buttercream on the bottom of each .
