This cake was a surprise birthday cake for my Mom one year. It was my first time working with fondant, and before I had any of my fondant tools, so everything was shaped, cut, and designed by hand or use of a sharp knife. The Mario torso on top of the cake,
was solid fondant. He was set on a small section of iced cake, using a couple toothpicks inserted into the bottom to help keep him upright. The edge was then surrounded by a 1.5″ strip of fondant to give the appearance of one of the “pipes” Mario enters/exits in the video game. To this day, she still has the Mario from the cake. I did learn not to use too much buttercream icing on a cake when placing fondant pieces on it, as the pieces started to slide some. All-in-all I was proud of how my first fondant cake turned out.
