This simply cute cake was made for our good friends’ little girl, when she turned 4. Her Mom had gotten a My Little Pony for a topper so I decided to go with just a fondant rainbow, as the pony for the cake was Rainbow Dash. To make the rainbow
, simply color 6 different sized portions of fondant a different color of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple). Each rainbow stripe will need to be longer than the last to achieve the desired rainbow look, so the fondant balls need to gradually get bigger. Next, roll each ball into a long roll (or “worm” shape) and place them alongside each other, adhering with water as necessary. Be sure to form the innermost and outermost colors (in my case this was purple and red), around 3″ long pieces of drinking straw, stiff wire, or something else you have handy, to be able to easily stand it on the cake. Last, cut out 4 cloud shapes from white fondant. Make the two complete clouds by laying each rainbow end on 1 cloud piece, then lay the identical cloud pieces on top, covering the rainbow ends, and seal edges together with a little water. This way, all you see from both sides of the cake, is clouds, without any uneven rainbow ends being visible. Let it all dry & you’ve got your rainbow cake topper. The cake was a 2-layer cake with buttercream icing and a nice border piped on. Once at the party I then placed the rainbow, over Rainbow Dash, pushing it into the cake to the cloud edges, and it was ready.
