3D Bear Head Cake

This cake is one of the top most challenging ones I have created to date. The birthday girl requested a bear cake & her mom sent me a picture of what she was wanting, an actual roaring bear, not a teddy bear :), “something like this. or better”. Yeah I can do better ;). So I googled “grizzly bear” & searched the pictures for a facial picture to base my cake off of. This is the image I decided to go with.

Start by baking 3-10″ & 2-8″ chocolate cakes & making a batch of chocolate frosting. Once the baking, cooling, stacking, frosting, & trimming was complete, now started the “fur” application; one-half inch at a time…………………….. approx. 1 hour later, the bottom part was “furred” :).

To get the mouth to look so dimensional, I used Rice Krispy Treats covered in modeling chocolate. Make a batch of Rice Krispy Treats to use to form the mouth & ears (totally form the rest of the batch into a pan to be cut into squares & eaten later ;)). Decided to form the mouth over a 10″ cake pan so I knew it would fit on the cake once it was hardened, then melted chocolate over every crevice so it would be as smooth as I could get it for the modeling chocolate to not look all lumpy once applied :). Then let it all harden.

Give your hands a stretch & massage to relieve some of the lingering cramping from the “fur” lol, it won’t take long for the chocolate to harden. Once hardened, place the mouth/nose form on the cake (1), spread on some frosting to attach it to the cake (2) & make it look more uniform :). Next use modeling chocolate & white fondant (3) to cover the inside of the mouth & add some teeth.

Use black fondant to form eyes (add some more frosting around the eyes to make it look less freaky lol, & a nose. Brush on a little piping gel over the eyes & the nose to give it a wet, shiny, more natural look.

Attach the ears, then finish piping on the “fur” over the next hour ;), & you have an awesome looking bear cake that will make a bear loving 6 year old that requested it squeal with delight :)! PS I made a 2nd cake like this for a 15 year olds team party (his team was the Bears :)) & it was a hit with them as well ;). I don’t think there was any squealing per se but maybe a “dude, wow!” or 2 😉 or whatever teens are saying these days. I think “phat” was so 20 years ago lol.
